Blue Hair and Breakfast Cereal...

So recently, my sister-in-law and I got to talking and we decided that we should try more 'natural' approaches to taking care of our skin and hair. This is also mainly cause we're cheap and we don't feel like buying ridiculously expensive hair products, and we'd rather just try to make something at home. Neither of us are very 'green' or organic by any means but we do accept the fact that it is rather common sense that lots of chemicals can't always be good for your skin and hair. So we decided that during this summer while I am at home, and hopefully even this fall when I move away again, that we're going to do what we call 'egg wash' nights. :) I know this sounds a little scary but don't worry it isn't as bad as it sounds. :)

No this isn't evidence of my bad dancing skills.
The foot on the left is mine, the foot on the right is Katie's.
We realized after we chose the colors that they were almost identical
Mom (not surprisingly) chose brown :)
Earlier today though, we decided that it was necessary for all of us to go get pedicures in town because after all you don't get on an overnight flight with unpainted toes. Its just not done! Of course Katie needed to come too for some girl bonding and in the end we decided that we each need one of those amazing massage chairs to have at our own homes cause they're pretty much amazing. Not to mention getting pedicures more often would be nice as well. :)

So when we got home we decided to have our very first egg wash night and we began by mixing egg yolks and olive oil together. It takes a little whisking but soon you have a pretty thick cream. Once that's done we put on some gloves and massaged the mixture into our scalps and hair. This was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be because it was so thick, an odd thing though was how quickly it dried cause of the egg yolks. I guess if you want it a little more runny and to have a bit more moisture you can add more oil. I guess you're supposed to do about 1T oil per yolk. I probably did closer to 1t per yolk though just cause I have issues with breakouts anyway and didn't want the oil from my scalp to affect my face. Which it can cause I know my forehead breaks out more whenever I have bangs, so it is something worth thinking about. Then we got a couple of thin towels (just to give our necks a break), soaked them in warm water, wrung them out, microwaved them (to get them even hotter), and then wrapped up our hair in them. This is because the heat from the towel helps the oils in your hair to stay more active and so then your hair can soak up more of the egg goody that it needs. :)

Then we decided that we should use the egg whites to make ourselves a face mask. Sadly though there was something wrong with the mixer we tried to use to whip up the egg whites so some strange foreign matter was discovered in our egg wash :( Not to be deterred though, I decided that we didn't need a recipe and we could whip something up on our own! So using a couple tablespoons of very strong green tea, a couple tablespoons of raw milk, some oat flour, and some honey, we mixed ourselves up a face mask. Afterwards we decided that we could probably head this same mixture up and serve it to someone as breakfast food and they really wouldn't know the difference.... I guess that is supposed to be the point of using these kinds of beauty products? After applying this to our face, (with a LOT of laughing, as you can see from the picture included, its a little difficult to get 'smooth coverage) we let it dry for a little bit and then washed it off. We decided that it was probably best to wash off over the kitchen sink, which has a garbage disposal. :) The hair mixture we left on for a little bit longer and then washed out with warm water and our regular shampoo and conditioner.

As for how these products turned out and what they did for us. Well for sure we're closer as sisters cause you can't go through something like that without becoming closer to each other :) In all seriousness though I really think that the milk and honey in the face mask did a lot for moisturizing my face. Normally after I wash my face I need to put on some for of moisturizer within about 4 minutes or I'll feel like a piece of sandpaper. Its been well over an hour and a half now though and my face still feels fine. As for my hair, its gotten a chance to air dry after we washed it and it does feel very soft. I also know that normally I have to put some for of frizz control oil or something on my hair once I'm done in the shower (remember now, I'm in Colorado, everything dries up out here) and I didn't put on any but my hair is still super soft and smooth and very non-frizzy. So.. initial vote on egg wash nights... YES! :) Not to mention now that I'm all fancied up I'm even more ready for my mom and I's trip to England! :) Keep a close eye on this web page cause there will be lots of updates I promise. Especially now that I have a new camera :)
